Just a year ago, it would have been virtually unthinkable that the Senate would weigh in on an arms deal to Saudi Arabia. Every one of the 27 votes against this arms deal sends a crystal clear message that the Saudi-led carpet bombing of Yemen must come to an end, and Riyadh must meaningfully engage in a political solution to end the bloodshed in Yemen.“  said Kate Gould, FCNL’s Legislative Representative for Middle East Policy   MN Senator Al Franken,  a co-sponsor of the bill along with Senators Chris Murphy (CT), Rand Paul (KY) and Mike Lee (UT) stated that “The very fact that we are voting on it today sends a very important message to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia that we are watching your actions closely and that the United States is not going to turn a blind eye to the indiscriminate killing of men, women and children” FNVW, gratefully acknowledges the Minnesota Peace Project for its leadership on this important initiative.   To read more, go to: "Senate Rejects Resolution Blocking Arms Sale to Saudi Arabia", Roll Call ""Indifferent to Yemen's Misery," Senate Approves Massive Saudi Arms Deal", Common Dreams //////////////////////////////////////Violence at Home and Abroad We are all aware of the horror and trauma in so many places around the world. The article below starkly reminds us to never neglect the reality so many of our neighbors in the United States are experiencing every day. -------------------------   Iraq v Chiraq: How Chicago Violence Feels Like a War ·        BBC correspondent Ian Pannell has travelled to many places ravaged by violence. He covered the war in Iraq, reported from the frontlines in Afghanistan and more recently, covered the devastation in Syria. For his latest project, the Washington, DC-based Pannell stayed a little closer to home, travelling to Chicago to explore what is behind the city's skyrocketing homicide rate. His report is an intimate look at life in the most troubled parts in the south and west of the Illinois city, where most homicides occur, where rival gangs war with one another over matters both large and small - with deadly consequences. While conceding there are many significant differences between an active war zone like Syria and the streets of Englewood or Austin, where Pannell visited, he still noticed some similarities. He spoke with BBC News' Jessica Lussenhop about what he saw. Chicago streets aerial   “….they live with levels of trauma and danger and stress that aren't normal, and you can't live with that much threat and that much danger on a regular basis and it not affect you."   To read, go to: "Iraq v Chiraq: How Chicago violence feels like a war", BBC News //////////////////////////////////////Census Poverty Numbers are Encouraging but Much Work Remains   The Friends Committee on National Legislation welcomed the U.S. Census Bureau’s release of data showing poverty fell to 13.5 percent in 2015. This drop of 1.8 percentage points is the best we have seen in 16 years. Noteworthy, median household income rose by 5.2 percentage points, or $2,798, the largest one year increase ever recorded in the U.S. with data going back to 1967. However, we still have 43.1 million people living in poverty (below $24,036 for a family of four), and the poverty rate has yet to return to its pre-recession level from 2007. It is a travesty that in a country with such abundance and wealth as the United States, more than one out of every eight people, and nearly one out of every five children live in poverty. Today’s numbers demonstrate the important role public policy plays for everyday families. The recent improvements to the EITC and Child Tax Credit are particularly critical. The new data from the Supplemental Poverty Measure show that these two tax credits kept 9.2 million people from falling into poverty. Similarly, SNAP (formerly food stamps) kept 4.6 million people out of poverty. To read the entire article and its policy implications, go to: "Census Poverty Numbers are Encouraging but Much Work Remains", Friends Committee on National Legislation ////////////////////////////////////// Open Letter by 375 Leading Scientists on Consequences of The U.S. "Walking Away" from Paris Climate Change Agreement On September 20, 2016, 375 members of the National Academy of Sciences, including 30 Nobel laureates, published an open letter to draw attention to the serious risks of climate change. The letter warns that the consequences of opting out of the Paris agreement would be severe and long-lasting for our planet’s climate and for the international credibility of the United States. To read their letter and the full list of signers following the text of the letter, go to: "An Open Letter Regarding Climate Change From Concerned Members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences", Responsible Scientists ////////////////////////////////////// Save the Date / Become a Co-Host   FNVW's Fall Fundraiser will be held on October 14th beginning 5:30pm onward at the home of Gail Daneker and Ian Keith (1791 Dayton Ave., Between Marshall and Selby/Fairview and Wheeler in St. Paul). Students will have opportunity to think and write on one of 3 questions, one on unpacking cultural biases and creating a more inclusive society.  Another is focused on developing one's own peacemaking activity, and a third on the Peace Literacy work of Captain Paul K. Chappell of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.  Full topics, guidelines, and suggested resources, as well as classroom speakers, are available now by contacting Larry Johnson at 612-747-3904 or larryjvfp@gmail.com. Last year's first place winner, Northfield's Lauren Wieber, is using her award to fund a 5 month service project in the Dominican Republic.  Her essay, "Harmony", said, "People everywhere have differing values and ideas, yet we can still co-exist.  It is how we respond to differing opinions that sparks conflict. . . Harmony is cooperation, sympathy, and fellowship.  It's a way to approach and respond to conflict. . . something which can also accentuate and remind us of the beauty of all the different people of the world." Leslie Reindl, for whom the contest was named, was a prominent Minnesota Peace Activist who died in 2014.  The contest is the outgrowth of efforts by her husband/fellow activist, Wilhelm Reindl, to fulfil Leslie's legacy to advance the vision of a "true, universal, Peaceable Kingdom".  Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, www.mapm.org, is a coalition of over 70 Minnesota peace and justice organizations, pooling resources, ideas, and efforts to work for a more just, peaceful, sustainable community and world.
